Operation - Counteroffensive Phase VII
Rodger was participating in an operation run jointly with 3/1 Infantry west of Ngia Hanh, a small district southwest of Quang Ngai city. The command post track, accompanied by the three mortar tracks, had established an NDP while platoons of E Troop worked the area around Hill 411.
On the morning of Rodger's death, the CP was hit with multiple RPG's. Rodger was struck with one of the RPG's as he sat on the ACAV. He sustained major trauma. According to reports, he died enroute to Chu Lai on a MedEvac bird.
I personally saw the incident. Rodger was an outstanding young man. I met relatives years later during an ARTEP at Camp Shelby, MS.
I have thought about Rodger numerous times over the years. His folks need to be proud of his service to our country.
